Dad battles MS to take on London marathon with son

A father who fears he could soon need a wheelchair will fulfil an ambition by running his last marathon with his son by his side. Peter Marenghi, of Stone, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 25 and now sometimes needs to use a walking stick.

Microchip implant delivers timed drug doses to patients with osteoporosis

Doctors have hailed the success of a small clinical trial in which patients were given microchip implants that released medicine straight into their bodies. The devices released a dose of drug at a specific time each day, replacing the daily hormone injections currently used to manage the disorder.

Disabled people face unlimited unpaid work or cuts in benefit

Some long-term sick and disabled people face being forced to work unpaid for an unlimited amount of time or have their benefits cut under plans being drawn up by the Department for Work and Pensions. Mental health professionals and charities have said they fear those deemed fit to undertake limited amounts of work under a controversial assessment process could suffer further harm to their health if the plans go ahead.

Delay NHS 111 phoneline rollout, doctors urge

Doctors' leaders say they have "serious concerns" about the rollout of the NHS 111 phoneline in England. The free one-stop number for patients with urgent, but not life-threatening symptoms, is planned for April 2013. The British Medical Association says existing services may come under strain and wrote to the health secretary asking for the deadline to be relaxed. Other organisations echo its worries.
